Humane Choice

I decided to sleep on my thoughts and do some research for both sides so I could figure out if I am really strongly compelled to be a vegan or if I can find a way to be an ethical meat eater.

According to the Global Animal Partnership their animals are held to a high standard to ensure proper treatment and a good life.

I read through the treatment regulations of every animal HERE and the main promise is

Step 1: No cages, no crowding
Step 2: Enriched environment
Step 3: Enhanced outdoor access Step
4: Pasture centered
Step 5: Animal centered: Bred for outdoors
Step 5+: Animal Centered: Entire life on same farm

I would say that I think that is at least a humane way of life for the animal. Is the animal still killed for consumption... yes. Is my problem with eating meat? I can't say that it is because I just had meat yesterday. My problem is with the sever mistreatment of an animal for its meat production. I feel like I would eat a humanely raised and killed animal. It just seems weird right... I don't agree with animal mistreatment but I do agree with it being killed???? I don't understand that idea either but its compromise for me and for the love of my meat loving husband. The main problem is that these farms held to these standards don't sell at every store. Every piece of meat sold at Whole Foods must pass through a 5 step GAP farm. Well great... the closes Whole Foods is only 4 hours away. I checked into Brookshire's Fresh but they didn't have a statement on their website that talked about animal welfare standards or anything like that other than to say it was "antibiotic and growth hormone free beef and veggie fed organic chicken" which doesn't say anything about if its humanely raised or treated.  I also found a "Certified Humane" retailer. The closest ones are of course Dallas and Houston. I am also wondering about dog food... like how is that manufactured?

HERE is a list of where you can buy certified humane meat as well as HERE for humane choice products.

In all this research I realized my dogs eat factory farmed mistreated animals I am sure... so I guess they have humane dog food too.

WELL GREAT this sounds expensive but I can either refuse to eat meat or at least be informed and buy meat from farmers who do the right thing.

Slaughterhouse...

I bought this book “Skinny Bitch” and I really liked it up until the chapter “Dead rotting flesh” which basically talked about the inhumanity of eating animals. It quoted much of the book Slaughterhouse and was the most disturbing scaring thing I have read. What made it worse was I already saw this

the day before and thought “Maybe I should be vegetarian!”

This book really made me want to be totally Vegan. I don’t know if this feeling will last and it will be really difficult since my husband has no desire to be vegan. I went to the grocery store and felt guilty even looking at the meat case because all I could see were the images from this book. I don’t even want to buy or cook meat for my husband. Deciding not to eat it isn’t the only thing purchasing and cooking it is not good for me either considering the problem with it isn’t just about consumption but more about not buying into the inhumane slaughtering and use of animals. It was really disturbing to even read about dairy and egg production.  So now I am all like WELL SHIT if I have a soul I will be vegan. I have had vegan meals multiple times since going healthy but I still ate meat and dairy. I buy free-range eggs already but according to the book that statement isn’t regulated and may not be accurate plus they are still slaughtered…

My cousin called this! I was talking about meat consumption and killing things. I swore off killing things a long time ago. I don’t even kill bugs…. I make my husband do it. Now I see that this isn’t any better because the bug is still dying BUT not at my hands. Its murder for hire… that’s still wrong isn’t it hahah
This is the same with my husband hunting. I don’t mind that he hunts because I can’t change that he wants to hunt but I refuse to shoot an animal. Did I eat what he killed? Yes. I know again this is weird right but my feeling was “It is already dead it would be wrong to let the animals life be wasted by refusing to eat it if it already died for consumption anyway.”

Now I have to decide do I think that eating the meat of a wild animal that is shot and dies instantly is humane.  Do I think that there is a humane way to kill any animal? Should killing an animal for consumption ever be ok? I DON’T KNOW

Am I turning into a hippie PETA freak? OH GOD

I already check products for no animal testing which I am not 100% on… I am sure there are things I use that have in some way had animal testing associated with their production. OH GOD I am evil. I am sure a lot of people will think that my concern is ridiculous.

This may quite possibly be a fad that fades away from consciousness unless I reread that chapter everyday which I have no intention of doing OH GOD my eyes are still bleeding a little.

I do however intend to be vegan for the next week at least and see what happens. I plan on questioning this feeling and my decision to change my ideals on meat consumption and what I find humane and acceptable. Everyone is different and has a different idea of what is and is not ok for an animal to endure but I think if everyone was honest with themselves and looked into the real horrors of meat production nobody should find that acceptable EVER.

Now here is the big problem… I like meat. I have gone a day without eating meat but not more than a day. How can I do this? I guess its like giving up anything else you have to find a swap for it and let your tastes and cravings change. I already know I love veggie burgers and vegetarian items at the store. I already swapped my milk for almond milk so that’s done. I guess I will have to test out those soy products that imitate chicken and ground beef and see what happens.

I am not saying that I am making a lifetime change to be vegan because I can’t say that with certainty I am still trying to decide how much of this is still shock talking and how much of this is unacceptable to me forever. This is something I have to search my thoughts and feelings on.  Should I do this because I feel like its wrong or should I follow the norm of society because I grew up on it and learned to disassociate with where the meat comes from and how it gets into my grocery store.

If you have been considering a vegan diet, here are 5 reasons why this type of diet is a good idea.
1. Humane Choices
If you eat meat, dairy products or eggs, you are contributing to the often abusive conditions of farm-raised animals. Each year, thousands upon thousands of animals suffer through the torture of being used for food. By eating vegan, you can help eliminate this abuse. If you choose to become a vegan, you alone will save hundreds of animals a year from being killed in a horrible way.
2. Health
A vegan diet is a healthy diet. People who eat a vegan diet are less likely to develop things like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes because meat can contain things that are bad for a person’s health. When you decide to eat a vegan diet, your health will begin to improve immediately.
3. Save The Environment
If you truly care about helping the environment in every way possible, you must seriously consider becoming vegan. The meat industry not only contributes to pollution, but it is also a contributing factor to climate change. If you want to live an environmentally conscious life, you need to become a vegan.
4. Energy
If you are sick and tired of both looking and feeling drained of energy, you may want to consider becoming a vegan. Not only will a vegan diet give you an amazing amount of energy, but it will also help you look better. Animal products are not only draining on the inside of the body, but these products can also make you look drained on the outside. If you want to look and feel more energized, you should consider changing to a vegan diet.
5. Think About It
When you eat meat, you are also eating things like feces and other gross bodily fluids. According to studies, meat is the leading cause of food poisoning cases. When you eat meat, you are also eating nasty contaminants that can make you very sick. If you want keep nasty contaminants out of your body, try eating a vegan diet.
If you want to eat a diet that is better for both your health and the environment, you may want to consider eating a vegan diet. Not only will a vegan diet make you look and feel healthier, but this type of diet also contributes to the humane treatment of animals. If you truly care about your body and the earth, there is no better lifestyle choice than eating a vegan diet.

So....for right now no slaughterhouse is getting my money until I do further research on what I find humane and that I can ethically live with.

Minty Fresh

I have not weighed in several weeks. I decided to focus more on habits rather than a number on the scale. BUT I think that may have been a mistake because I feel like I have gained weight. I have also been out of the gym for a few weeks because of illness and being busy. I did yoga and zumba a couple of times, but I feel like I am not working hard enough.

I know that this is a long journey and lately that long road ahead of me has made me lose sight of goals. I am being ridiculous but thats ok because talking through this helps.

These are things that I must stop saying...

JUST REST TODAY ITS OK NOT TO WORK OUT: this does not help me. If I have a legit reason not to work out then thats one thing but sometimes its more just I don't want to. I was working out 5 days a week and now I am lucky to get in 3... EMBARRASSED

ITS OK TO EAT MORE BECAUSE ITS HEALTHY: my portions are getting bigger lately... I need to start focusing on eating slow and thinking about why I am eating. Focus on health and feeling good not about mmm that tastes good lets eat more.

YOU HAVE SO FAR TO GO YOU MAY AS WELL CHEAT TODAY: I am not a big cheater - my worst cheats are from the above mentioned. I may eat healthy but calories in healthy foods still count! I also have to stop cheating myself out of a workout. The back injury and then getting sick got me out of my routine and I fell into bad habits again.

It's weird how quickly you can get out of a routine. I have to tighten my belt and keep my head focused on the goal.

BE HEALTHY FIT AND ACTIVE SO THAT YOU ARE A BETTER WOMAN INSIDE AND OUT!

I CAN DO THIS SHIT

moving on...

I have a slight mint obsession.

I love all things mint. I love mint in food and drink but I also really love mint bath products.

Here is a brief product review of my current minty fresh toiletries

BioInfusion Rosemary Mint shampoo and conditioner. This is a Walgreens brand and is currently on major sale at $5 a bottle. WHAT? I love mint shampoo and conditioner and have used many different brands. The reason I like this one is it actually makes your scalp tingle which I love. Its also not tested on animals and is paraben and sulfate free which is always a plus. If you need to try a new shampoo/conditioner I highly recommend it.

Dr. Teal's RELAX. Eucalyptus Spearmint bubble bath and epsom salts. This is great after a long hard day and great after a tough workout to relax your muscles and senses. I like to follow this up with mint tea.

Mirra Daily Body Wash - Rosemary Mint. It smells fabulous and has quinoa protein and vitamin A.

And last a favorite for years Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Stress Relief in Eucalyptus Spearmint. I love everything they make- their shampoo and conditioner is also really nice but doesn't have the tingle factor. I use the body mist at night and I also use the linen spray and have since I was in about 8th grade. I LOVE THAT STUFF

Just an FYI

Smaller Me Can Play Fashionista!

I used to be very obsessed with clothes and shoes - until it wasn't as fun to shop for these things. I stopped loving the shopping when I never felt cute in anything I tried on OR the only clothes that were really cute in my size were just too expensive. (Which they still are... but thanks to Gwynnie Bee I kind of worked around that a bit. See the end of this post for more on that topic!)

For the last several years I have been a yoga pants t-shirt loving fool- which is comfortable and great. I will never give up on my comfy style BUT ...

Since losing 56 pounds I think its important to tap back into my fashion sense and actually try to look presentable in public again.

Yesterday my husband and I went to Longview and while there I made him go with me to TJ Max, Payless, and Target

Lately I have been obsessed with leopard print, rose gold, and boots! (Also purses but I couldn't find a purse I loved that was under $100)

This was an outfit that I put together last night from stuff I already owned.
This is a black pencil skirt that I got as a gift and couldn't zip but was too embarrassed to return.
It now fits and looks super cute with my white leopard cardigan, belt, and purple suede wedges!

Speaking of SHOES - I love the little booties. I have wanted some for a long time but I have not bought a pair of shoes... well since my wedding shoes. I used to love shoe shopping. I had tons of fun heels and things but if you have never weighed 275 pounds you don't understand how much heels are NOT fun for a fat person. Its just too much weight to push onto your feet and toes. Now that I weigh less heels aren't as painful anymore and so I am going to start putting them in my closet again.

Check out these cute Payless finds

$50 for the leopard Christian Siriano booties

$40 for the American Eagle vintage style booties

Hopefully I will keep up losing weight and eventually I will be able to buy clothes not just shoes and accessories! BUT until than I have Gwynnie Bee.

Here is the shirt that is currently being shipped to me - SO EXCITED

Just to show you the value of Gwynnie Bee I pay $34 a month and I can rent one item out at a time. This shirt that I am getting is $112 at the retail website. To own all of these designer clothes I am renting would cost a fortune and I can return them before they are too big for me and I waste all the money.

If you haven't yet go check it out at Gwynnie Bee's Website

Lox and Cream Cheese in a Quiche!

Lets start this post with a confession...
Those of you who follow me on facebook already know this but last night GASP I had alcohol!
I had to do it. If you are a teacher you know what I mean.

Yes its true yesterday was extremely stressful!
I won't go into the details but I had several things yesterday that made me seriously question my job.
Those kind of moments probably should not lead to "Maybe I should have a drink!" but they did...

I started with plan A which was to go for a long walk with my husband. That helped a little but it wasn't enough. The beer he ran and got for me WAS.

So yes I cheated on my goal of no alcohol and it wasn't a bachelorette party or wedding it was just a regular old Friday night at home with my husband. I don't really regret this decision because it did help me relax and let go of the stuff that happened at work.

FAST FORWARD TO THIS MORNING

I woke up and it was GORGEOUS outside!

I got stuff to have a bagel and lox but for some reason this morning that didn't sound quite so satisfying on my cool fall morning.

So I pulled out my whole wheat crust recipe again and made my bagel and lox into a quiche.

Wheat Crust
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 4 tbs coconut oil
  • 2 tbs skim milk
  • 3/4 tsp salt
Filling
  • Laughing Cow cream cheese wedges
  • Liquid Eggs such as Break-Free Kroger egg product
  • Capers
  • Dill
  • Smoked Salmon

Put crust in the pie pan and then add all ingredients except eggs

Add egg and bake at 350 for about 45 minutes

While it baked I went outside and played with my dogs, drank my delicious pumpkin spice coffee

Sugar Free Pumpkin Spice Coffee Mate MMMM

I love how our pool has been gorgeous the last month but its FREEZING ... of course!

After a good play session the quiche was done

What a wonderful Saturday morning spent soaking in the gorgeous day

Yoga and Cereal

I didn't talk about Yoga last night.
I had a hard day at work yesterday. I felt sick still and almost thought I was going to have to get someone to watch my class while I ran to the restroom sick. Thankfully I just controlled my breathing and drank some water and it helped a bit.
At the end of work I had such a horrible headache and I was real dizzy feeling.
I came home and laid in the hammock with my puppies and was content to not go to Yoga but just lay at home and relax. When Chris came home he told me to drink a big glass of water and that maybe I was just dehydrated and that water would help me get some energy back.
He was actually right. I drank some water rested a little more than headed to Yoga.

It was actually harder than the last time for some reason. Yoga is very relaxing and the last 10 minutes where you lay on your back with the essential oil towel in silence is the best part haha BUT during the routines it takes a LOT of arm strength.

Just about any yoga posture in which you place your palms on the floor and use them as a foundation to support your body weight strengthens your arms and shoulders.
Standing postures in which the arms must work to resist the downward pull of gravity develop arm strength as well.

These were the ones that hurt

Needless to say my feet did't come off the floor.... YEAH

Holding this plank was ROUGH

This felt good but it is not as comfortable as you would think on your shoulders/neck area...

First of all this is HARD I didn't get my butt off the floor but I know I can soon. This is a serious ab workout fo sho and when she makes you hold this for what felt like 10 minutes GURG

I mostly felt like this though...

In the end I was really happy that I ended up going and didn't stay home because it really did help me feel better. My headache went away and I felt taller and stretched out. I actually felt more relaxed than I did when I was just laying on the couch.

When I got home I walked through the door and asked hubby to come help me and he said he couldn't and sounded like he was in pain. I went into the den and he was laying on the floor. He apparently pulled his back really bad. He can't even walk. SO guess who had to take ANOTHER day off work. I am thankful I have a job where I can easily take a day off but I only get so many and I am going to end up using them all just this month. UGH
So I am home with him so I can take him to the doctor in a couple of hours and also getting all the stuff he needs. I am his nurse today since he can't walk poor boy. Apparently we both need to be careful about our backs when we work out.

So this morning he laid in bed with an ice pack and I laid in bed next to him with cereal and
watched Jeopardy.

This is my new favorite cereal

Cascadian Farms Organic Cereals are really good
This is Hearty Morning Fiber

I add in a few raw almonds and 2 dates that I chopped up and cover in almond coconut milk.
Any cereal is good with Almond Coconut milk.
